Regional Information

Thank you to Bruce James for providing photography and information, from his book "The Lake Macquarie Scene". Contact info@bayhotelmotel.com if you'd like to purchase or enquire about the book.

Lake Macquarie...

... it's refreshing to walk along the shores, allowing the air to nourish the mind, squelching brown sand between white toes and listening to the water gently stroking the rocks. It's peaceful, tranquil and occasionally magical. Everything moves slowly. Nature takes measured steps and 9-to-5 lifestyles seem light years away. Creeks and tributaries trickle into the main basin, while the 'noreasters' and 'southerlies' provide relief even on the hottest summer day.

Possums venture close to backyard barbecues sniffing for scraps; and now and then a fish belly flops lazily on a swell. City tension, meetings, deadlines, bad news and maniacal drivers hardly dare to approach the lake because a worry-proof fence has been drawn around the 180-kilometre shore-line. The only reminders of the life on the outside are the roads with their ever increasing flow of through-traffic rushing pell-mell to other places.

The Watagans...

... rugged, steep and exhilarating. They provide views which are unmatched anywhere else. The mountain range has been divided into 13 state forests by the Forestry Commission and there are several camping and picnic grounds hacked out of thick bushland.

The rainforests, smelling damp and bursting with life, are spectacular. They are popular for bushwalking, with marked trails on some of the most popular routes.

The mountains cut the lake off from the rest of the Hunter Valley because they stand as an almost impenetrable barrier. They've always resisted attempts to open them up and the token roads that do climb the mountains are precipitous and winding.

The Beaches...

... on the other side of the lake is the Pacific Ocean and the now famous beaches, which are reputed to be among the finest in the State. The produce world-class surfers, champion surf life saving teams and great suntans. The sand stretches from Dudley, past Redhead and along the magnificent Nine Mile Beach. The beaches are as wide as airport runways, clean and generally uncrowded.

The Hunter Valley...

...Australia's Oldest Winemaking Region. Depending upon the season, Hunter Valley Wine Country will greet you with a different face. The burnt orange leaves of Autumn, the bursting buds and verdant greens of Spring, the deep blue haze of Summer and the cool grey greens of Winter... each of them will leave you yearning to come back.

Explore over 80 Vineyards, delight your palate at one of the excellent restaurants, or pack a picnic and find a secluded spot set against a backdrop of vines and blue skies (Information from Hunter Tourism. Find out more about the Hunter Valley at http://www.huntertourism.com).
